Nurse-Patient Ratios:
Unit Information:
- Beds: 36
- Mixed Patient Types: May include Med-Surg (MS) and PCU patients
- MS Patient Ratio: 1:5
Required Certifications:
Common Diagnoses/Patient Types:
- Cardiac: CHF, NSTEMI, MI, heart block, pacemaker, TAVR, CABG (day 2), Watchman procedures
- Cath recovery post sheath removal
- Bradycardia, VT
- PCU overflow: respiratory failure, hypotension, anemia, sepsis, post-surgical, etc.
Experience Requirements:
- Must have PCU/Stepdown/Tele experience
- No first-time travelers
- Preferred experience with TAVR and CABG (typically assigned to core staff)
- Must have experience with all of the following titrated drips:
- Amiodarone
- Cardizem
- Dobutamine
- Dopamine
- Heparin
- Nitro (initiation)
- Insulin
RN Responsibilities:
- Required to titrate drips
- Tele monitoring: Must be able to read own strips; dedicated monitor tech available
- RT Equipment: BiPAP, High Flow, stable trach—RNs expected to troubleshoot only
Staffing Support:
- Charge Nurse: On each shift, typically non-assigned, may take 1-2 patients in rare situations
- Patient Care Techs (PCAs): Typically 1:8–12 ratio, possibly less
Scheduling & Shifts:
- Hours: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM / 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- Charge nurse manages schedule to meet unit needs; traveler requests are considered
- Weekend Requirement: Minimum of 4 weekend days per month
- Days: Saturday, Sunday
- Nights: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: 3 out of 5 major holidays
Float Policy:
- May float to ICU within patient population and Med-Surg units
Dress Code:
- Navy blue scrubs (not provided)
Orientation:
- 1 day New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- 1 day with Clinical Educator
- 1 floor orientation shift
