Description:
Maternal & Fetal Assessment:
- Perform admission assessments, including obstetric history, vital signs, and fetal heart rate monitoring (intermittent and continuous).
- Interpret external (and if trained, internal) fetal monitoring strips; recognize and respond to non-reassuring patterns.
- Labor Support & Delivery Assistance:
- Provide emotional support, coaching, and pain management (e.g., epidural monitoring, IV analgesia) throughout labor.
- Assist with vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections—prepare instruments, maintain sterile field, and support obstetric team.
- Post-Delivery & Newborn Care:
- Initiate immediate newborn care: Apgar scoring, thermoregulation, and cord clamping.
- Facilitate early skin-to-skin contact and support initiation of breastfeeding.
- Monitor mother’s postpartum status: fundal checks, lochia assessment, vital signs, pain control, and uterine involution.
- Clinical Interventions & Emergency Response:
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products per provider orders.
- Recognize and manage obstetric emergencies (e.g., hemorrhage, eclampsia, shoulder dystocia) and initiate appropriate protocols (e.g., Massive Transfusion, Code OB).
- Participate in neonatal resuscitation if certified (NRP).
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Accurately chart all assessments, interventions, and patient/family education in the EMR.
- Adhere to Joint Commission standards, AWHONN guidelines, and hospital policies for obstetric care and safety.
- Patient & Family Education:
- Teach peripartum patients and families about labor progress, pain-management options, newborn care, and postpartum self-care.
- Provide discharge teaching on feeding, maternal recovery, warning signs, and follow-up care.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams: obstetrics, anesthesia, neonatology, lactation consultants, and social services.
- Facilitate smooth handoffs to postpartum and newborn care units.
