Unit Overview – Endoscopy (RN)
Department: Endoscopy
Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS
Scrub Color: Royal Blue
Orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
Unit Structure & Operations
- Suite Details:
- 3 procedure suites total
- Typically, 2 rooms operational depending on anesthesia availability
- Staffing & Ratios:
- Travelers are primarily assigned to the Recovery area
- Recovery RN Ratio: 1:2–3 patients
- Shift & Scheduling Information:
- Schedule: Monday through Friday
- Start Times: Between 0900–1000
- Lab Closure: 1900 (7:00 PM)
- Shift Length: 8 or 10 hours (may be assigned)
- Call Requirements: None
- Holiday Coverage: Not required
- Floating: Within Endoscopy department only
Common Procedures
- Upper & Lower GI Scopes
- Colonoscopy
- EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
- ERCP (Handled in main PACU post-procedure)
- PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) Placement
RN Duties & Expectations
Intra-Op Responsibilities:
- Preparing endoscopy suite (equipment checks and supply readiness)
- Verifying procedural details and patient consent
- Assisting with patient positioning and procedural prep
- Direct support to the endoscopist (handling scopes, equipment, biopsies, cautery, foreign object retrieval)
- Managing documentation throughout procedure
- No endoscopy techs in the procedure room—RN is fully involved in GI procedures
Recovery Duties:
- Monitoring and assessing post-procedure patients
- Vital signs, level of consciousness, adverse reaction monitoring
- Pain management and medication administration
- Patient education and discharge readiness
- Collaboration with anesthesia and procedural teams
Team & Support
- Support Staff:
- 1 PCT in recovery
- 2 PCTs assigned to disinfecting and scope reprocessing
- Oversight: Charge RN or ANCC interviews patients pre-procedure
- RT Equipment: None used in this department
Experience Requirements
- Must have Endoscopy or PACU experience
- Preferred:
- Scrub experience
- PACU recovery experience
- GI procedural knowledge
- Sedation experience
